  • “Inspired by Ancient Lyric Poetry and “Palinody” for Confluences and Controversies to Emerge in Systemic Therapy”

           Chrysos, P., Karagianni, E., Ladianou,K., Kitraki, E., Tragoudara, M. & Venieraki V.

Abstract:

In ancient Greek lyric poetry, a palinode (παλινῳδία, palinōdía) was a revision of an earlier composition. The most famous example comes from Stesichorus, who initially depicted Helen of Troy as responsible for the war and was said to have lost his sight as divine punishment. He then composed a new poem—the Palinode—arguing that Helen had never actually gone to Troy and that a phantom had taken her place. According to legend, this act of narrative revision restored his sight. Though the term palinode is often negatively associated with uncertainty and instability, this presentation explores its therapeutic value through the lens of systemic thinking. In psychotherapy, palinode represents the process of revising and transforming personal narratives. By reintroducing uncertainty into life stories, it challenges rigid certainties, making space for new insights and alternative perspectives. In this way, it illuminates aspects of one’s history that may have remained hidden. Operating within the fourth dimension of time, palinode fosters personal evolution through the dynamic interplay of certainty and uncertainty. Just as Stesichorus rewrote his story, participants will be invited to reflect on the palinodies they have “composed”—the moments in their personal or professional lives where they have revised their narratives, reshaping their understanding of time and self.

  • “Rewriting Family Narratives: A Creative Approach to Amplifying the Child’s Voice in Family Therapy” (Workshop)

           Kitraki E., Chrysos P., Karagianni E., Tragoudara M., & Venieraki P.

Abstract:

Family dynamics are often shaped by rigid roles that create power imbalances and make it difficult for family members to communicate effectively. Since children lack the same means of communication as adults, they struggle to have their voices heard. In our times, where children are exposed to significant amounts of information and increasingly question traditional roles and hierarchies, the need for common-ground communication and connection between parents and children has never been more important. This workshop explores creative interventions where participants engage in expanding the language of therapy beyond verbal dialogue. It also introduces an approach where family members work with different therapists in separate sessions, while maintaining the systemic thinking. Rather than fragmenting the system, this temporary separation gives each person space for self-exploration, allowing each member to process their experiences independently, to return in family therapy sessions having gained a deeper understanding of their role within the family.  The workshop consists of three parts: A) Exploring the Family System – Participants will be introduced to a family case study, identifying relational dynamics, fixed roles, and presenting challenges. The discussion will focus on what stage of we are intervening and why temporarily separating family members can support deeper healing. B) Deconstructing Roles Through Play and Creative Arts – Using a fairytale as a therapeutic tool, participants will explore individual family narratives in small groups, analyzing roles through symbolic expression, in a way that feels both engaging and insightful. C) Reconstructing the Family Narrative – Participants will collaborate to integrate insights from previous exercise to reshape the family’s narrative. This revised story will then serve as an intervention tool, guiding how the actual family (in therapy) can enact and engage with it in session to foster growth and change.
